The factory steering rack and pinion on the Rhino is extremely weak as most of you serious off-roaders have probably found out.

F1 ENGINEERING has spent many hours designing a new rack housing system that is pretty much bullet proof, yet is a simple bolt in upgrade.

Our rack housing is CNC machined from a single billet of 6061-T6 aircraft quality aluminum, high strength aluminum bronze bushings are pressed into each end to support the rack gear,where the factory unit just floats around.

The rack gear itself is machined from a round bar of 300M alloy steel, a full 1.0" (25mm) diameter on the 10 tooth race rack. The gear is then heat treated to 200,000 psi tensile strength and then carbon nitride plasma coated to increase tooth strength and to give corrosion resistance.

Some of our competitors use a square section rack gear as they are readily available commercially, this also makes the housing easier to machine by just milling a slot into the two or three housing half sections, this of course opens the possibility of movement or failure at the joints.

We prefer to go the more difficult route and use the stronger round section rack gear and align boring the single piece housing to maintain the structural integrity of the whole unit, this also keeps the close tolerances that we require for minimum backlash in the gears.

The helical pinion gear is CNC hobbed from H11 aerospace tool steel and through hardened.

This rack & pinion assembly can be used with the stock tie rods or with the (recommended) BilletKing Off-Road billet tie rod/clevis kit, available in stock length and for 4" or 6" over long travel suspension.

The rod end clevises are CNC machined from a block of chrome-molly steel and have locating lugs machined into the end, these lugs fit into the rack end of both the BilletKing rack and the stock Yamaha rack to prevent the clevis from turning and to keep them vertical to the wheels. The clevises are bolted to the rack end with (supplied) grade 12.9 metric allen head bolts and spring washers.

These clevises can be used on the stock rack to convert to the stronger rod end track rod system. Use them to make your own track rods or purchase our complete kit.

Other aftermarket rack manufacturers use bent sheet metal clevises that are going to fail as soon as any real load is put to them. F1 Engineering has been in the racing business too long to do that, these will not fail - Guaranteed!

The tie rods are made from high strength 2024 aircraft structural aluminum. The kit comes with all grade 8 hardware, chrome molly high misalignment rod ends, chrome molly clevises and 17-4 stainless bump steer spacers. Can be used with the factory rack and uses the stock dust boots with a simple modification.

HIGH STRENGTH OUTER STEERING JOINTS

These outer steering joint housings are made from 17-4PH Stainless Steel and heat treated to 180,000 psi tensile strength. (grade 8 bolts are 150,000 psi). The bearing balls are heat treated and chrome plated 52100 bearing steel and run in a self lubricating, self sealing Teflon / Kevlar race and have 17-4 high misalignment spacers pressed in. They are a direct replacement for the zinc alloy stock items that are very weak and prone to breaking (at the wrong time). The high misalignment joints come with 12mm grade 12.9 socket head bolts and nyloc nuts for a simple bolt in upgrade.

HIGH STRENGTH TIE ROD EXTENDERS

These tie rod extenders are made from heat treated 17-4PH Stainless Steel, the same material used for aircraft landing gear components. They fit onto the factory tie rods when using long travel suspension and, with plenty of adjustment, extend the steering rods by 3 to 4 inches. They can be used with the factory outer steering joints or with our High Strength Steering Joints.

TIE ROD WRENCH

These tie rod wreches are styled after the professional racers special AN wrenches. They are CNC machined from lightweight, high strength, aircraft structural aluminum 7075 and are designed to fit perfectly on the steering box end of the factory tie rods, making removal and replacement of bent tie rods a whole lot easier. Throw one in your glove box or tool kit or with your spare tie rods (you don't carry spares?? foolish you) and it is there when you need it the most.

SUSPENSION SHEAR PLATES

The Yamaha Rhino is a great little side by side, and a super fun vehicle for family off-road sports. However, the basic frame as manufactured is marginal, strengthwise for the purpose that the vehicle was designed for.

When you start adding upwards of 12" extra track and wheelbase, longer suspension travel, heavier rate springs etc. along with all of the other bolt on modifications available, then you had better start looking at bracing the chassis to support these added loads.

DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORTS

Two more questionable areas on the Yamaha Rhino are the front and rear differentials. The gear sets are adequate but the housing tends to move around when loads are fed into them, (landing from jumps, berms etc.) The F1 ENGINEERING team designed these support mounts to tie into the Stress Plates as well as the frame to keep the differentials from moving, this makes a big difference to the life of the gears. The Rear Support can be used without the Rear Stress Plate but we don't recommend it. The Front Support bolts directly to the Front Stress Plate.

The front shock tower feeds the shock loads across the chassis, preventing the top shock mount from tearing and twisting. The removable shock mount plates allow many configurations of shock geometry, with available plates for longer shocks, stock shocks, etc.

The 2008 and later Rhino has the coolant reservoir repositioned to the lower right, just behind the front suspension. The reservoir is now subject to rocks and debris being thrown from the front wheels.
